Universe is Not Fine-tuned for People

The anthropic principle is the idea that the laws of physics are tuned precisely to allow complex life like ourselves emerge and so ponder the nature of the universe. It’s a principle dragged out again and again, particularly by the ID brigade, to suggest that there is a god running the show.

Of course, many scientists have wondered at the balance of these laws, arguing that any small change would alter the universe so radically that life would be impossible.

Now, James MacDonald and Dermott Mullan at the University of Delaware have shown that those laws we hold so very dear could vary by quite large margins and still allow sentient life to exist, thus neatly disposing of yet another piece of “evidence” for ID.
