UK scientists have demonstrated that brain cells are not destroyed by the genetic disorder and have reversed the physical effects of this autism-type disorder in afflicted mice.
The research focused on the MECP2 gene that causes the condition to develop and re-activated it in lab mice reversing many of the physical disabilities, such as immobility and breathing problems. Team member Dr Stuart Cobb, from Glasgow University, said: “This breakthrough provides a small piece of hope for sufferers.”
