I wouldn’t ordinarily post a story about a magnitude 4 comet reaching perihelion, but this may be special because of our illogical celebration of zeroes rolling over. Happy New Year, and happy comet spotting.
“For New Year, a Fairly New Comet”, Washington Post.
Our base-10 number system is a logical choice for a species with 10 fingerthumbs, and zeroes show up much less often than if we counted in binary. The “celebration of zeroes rolling over” may actually make sense if you consider it as a mnemonic device that prevents the writing of billions of checks with the wrong year on them.
