Who is Laurie Garrett? As reported by LawMeme, she is a Pulitzer prize-winning medical and science journalist for the daily New York City newspaper Newsday, best known for her work The Coming Plague. Last month, she attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland as a guest and wrote a (former?) friend of hers a VERY interesting email of what she saw there. The friend released the private, personal email to the Internet at large and the rest is history. Garrett’s email ends “Welcome to Earth; meet the leaders”. You should.

Thanks for posting that – I’d heard about this yesterday (via slashdot) but didn’t think the email was that interesting… boy was that wrong. I wonder if this release will have any impact on the various debates going on…
One thing I noticed – she mentions the people were financially wise but technically naive, and there was no mention of issues relating to scientific progress or space, etc. I wonder if that ever comes up in these sort of meetings? You’d think the impact of scientific progress (science fiction becoming reality :-)) would be rather important for people who care about the future!
