They moved some pieces, they swapped queens, they exchanged some pieces. Kasparov was doing pretty well and most reviewing grandmasters thought he had a shot at a win over Deep Junior. So on move 28 he offered the Deep Junior team a draw and they accepted. If you feel like the preceeding is a pretty disappointing description of what was to be a titanic, make-or-break stand of humanity when the chips are down, well, you’re feeling the same disappointment everybody else felt, too. This final game was carried live by the ESPN cable sports channel (!!!) and in an after-the-game interview Kasparov said his goal was not to win but instead to avoid losing, and that a draw with Deep Junior accomplished his goal. To everybody else it just plain sucked. In the end, Man Vs. Machine was decided today, and perhaps forevermore, not by the machine logic of perfection but instead by the human emotion of fear.
