Kasparov Crashes In Game 3 Due To Pilot Error

Garry Kasparov, playing white in Game 3 of Man Vs. Machine at the New York Athletic Club, began yet again with a D2-D4 queen pawn opening and subsequent standard development. By move 10, Deep Junior appeared to veer off the beaten path and violate some standard chess axioms by twice grabbing pawn sacrifices and allowing Kasparov to control the subsequent open files with his rooks, moving its knight to the edge of the board to boot. By move 17 Deep Junior’s castle was totally smashed and its king in the corner with only a knight and pawn for protection. However, by move 26 Deep Junior was on the rebound, forcing Kasparov back while reforming a solid front of black pieces in the shallow center of the board and even getting its king out in the corner and into the open. As Kasparov struggled to organize an attack led by his white knight, Deep Junior had developed a queen-rook combination in control of the center file and was attacking with his own knight. The turning point in the game was move 33, where Kasparov totally missed a move necessary to thwart a subtle line of play being spun by Deep Junior; he resigned rather than continue to play a doomed move 37 from two pawns behind. The Man vs. Machine overall score is thus tied at 1.5-1.5 with Game 4 starting at 3:30 ET on Sunday February 2 and webcast live.
