But is it true? Despite general acceptance by scientists for the dark matter idea, no definitive type of invisible candidate matter has actually been discovered yet. Now the current issue of American Scientist magzine profiles another rebel with another idea. Dr. Mordehai Milgrom thinks that perhaps there is no new dark matter – just an additional undiscovered force produced by the matter we already see. He thinks the familiar equation of Newton F=ma which is the bedrock of modern physics is incomplete. His MOND (for Modified Newtonian Dynamics) theory was proposed back in 1983 and explains much of the galactic observations as well as the dark matter theory does. Basically he theorizes that extra forces exist between objects that are accelerating very slowly with respect to one another. If true, this could say something fundamental about space, time and inertia that would be even more exciting than yet another new kind of particle. Worth keeping an eye on.
