The SoloTrek XFV (Exoskeleton Flying Vehicle) is transportation device from Trek Aerospace that holds promising applications in the military, paramilitary and civilian markets. You simply step on, strap yourself in and fly, taking off and landing vertically. It can hover for over 2 hours, reach 69 mph (111 kph), and travel over 100 miles (161 kph). The 10-person company has spent seven years and about $4 million, which includes funds from a $5 million, three-year military grant, to design the personal flying machine.
The military would be the first potential buyer, allowing soldiers to fly over land mines, impassable roads, rivers and areas where enemy troops might be hiding. Everyday consumers would be next, perhaps carrying tourists over inaccessible scenic country, shortening commute times and letting people live farther away from their jobs. But company founder Michael Moshier says the pure joy of flying will probably be enough to launch a future generation of enthusiasts into the air. “I don’t have any more adjectives to describe it. It is exhilarating beyond description.”
Now, Reuters reports that the Proof-of-Concept Prototype, which made its maiden flight in December 2001, is up for auction on eBay. “Frankly, we need the cash,” said Moshier. And it’s working. Bidding started at $50,000 and is now up to over $6,000,000.
