A nearby black hole, hurtling through the plane of our galaxy some 6000-9000 lightyears away, is providing us with the best evidence yet that black holes are formed by supernovas. GRO J1655-40, as it is called, is traveling at 250,000 mph–4x faster than the average velocity of nearby stars. The most probable cause is that it received a “kick” from a supernova explosion.
